Scottish Castles on Film – Half Day Experience

You are here: Home / Scottish Castles on Film – Half Day Experience

1/2 day

From: £60 per person
Beginning in Linlithgow, a short 20-minute train ride from Edinburgh
Available – April to September

Scottish History’s celebrated heroes and villains have brightened our movie screens and here is your chance to discover the filming locations for yourself. During this shared tour, fans of Mary, Queen of Scots, Robert the Bruce in the Outlaw King, and Black Jack and Jamie Fraser from Outlander will be transported in modern comfort from Linlithgow Railway Station to three magical filming locations. You might even be able to handle original props from the blockbuster.

Exploring

  • Linlithgow Palace
  • St Michael’s Church
  • Blackness Castle

Itinerary

We will start our journey in the Royal and Ancient Burgh of Linlithgow. You will have the opportunity to see the historic Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. The perfect setting for a filming location for Perth Castle in Outlaw King and Wentworth Prison in Outlander. The grounds outside the Palace and the loch were the backdrop for the stunning coronation scene of Robert the Bruce.

Beside the palace is St Michael’s Church which was used in Outlaw King for the wedding scene for Robert the Bruce and Elizabeth de Burgh and the funeral of Robert’s father Robert de Brus. Two fabulous locations from both a filming and historical perspective.

Our next location is Blackness Castle or otherwise known as Fort William in Outlander, Holyrood Palace in Mary Queen of Scots or where we saw Robert the Bruce’s wife Elizabeth imprisoned in Outlaw King.

To complete the experience, you will get the opportunity to handle actual props used in Outlaw King and hear stories of how the different productions adapted the sites for their films.
