Experience:
This is a tour based on, and immersed, in the Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon. Although the books are set in the Highlands, the filming of the Starz TV series took place in Central Scotland, with a number of the filming sites on the doorstep of our base in Linlithgow.
Our first stop of the day is to Craigmillar Castle, built in the 15th century and is one of our favourite castles to explore due to all its nooks and crannies! It is said many times but if the castle walls could talk Craigmillar certainly would have its share of stories. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here after the birth of her son and it is here that nobles (and Mary herself?) hatched the plot to kill Lord Darnley.
Craigmillar though is known to Outlander fans as the location for Ardsmuir Prison. We see where Jamie and his men were brought after Culloden, where we meet Lord John Grey again and of course that surprise character appears!
Then it is on to the most romantic spot on our Outlander Tours, Glencorse Kirk. You can’t help but feel romance in the air at this beautiful church which is now used for many an Outlander themed wedding. We spend about an hour here, listening to stories about the filming process and seeing some special photographs of the big day!
We then head eastwards driving past the battlefield of Prestonpans before we visit Preston Mill. The mill was used as Lallybroch Mill, where you may remember Jamie having to take a little dip in the water to hide from the Redcoats!
