Inspired by Visit Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016 – Mary’s Meanders will be hosting different workshops, talks, events throughout the year that embrace this theme. The first is detailed below.
In conjunction with BORDER KILT CRAFT – Tartan and Kilt making workshop.
Saturday 5th March 2-4pm
Westport Hotel, Linlithgow
Undoubtedly, one of the stars of The Outlander TV series has been the costumes, including a fascination with the traditional plaid kilt. While there are an abundance of kilt makers and shops offering kilts and tartan, you don’t often get a chance to go right back to basics, go behind the history of kilts and tartan, and see what actually goes into the making of this iconic product. So now you can take that opportunity to find out “How a kilt is made” and have a go at making an item for yourself.
We are delighted to bring to you an introductory workshop, delivered by Rachel Hammerton of The Border Kilt School, who is one of the few specialists in traditional kilt making.
The workshop will be 2hrs long and will cover:
- A brief history of tartan and highland dress
- A demonstration of kilts and tweed fabrics, including designs, pleating etc.
- Making a clan brooch or pin from tartan
All materials will be provided and you will have your own personal item to take home.
Ideal for anyone heading to New York in April for Tartan Week. Make your own corsage.
Price per person £20 (includes your own item to take away)
