Meet our tour guides
When you join one of our guided tours, you will be among friends. Our tour guides are chosen for their passion and presentation skills so that your tour will be exciting, well paced and great fun too.
Emma is the founder of Mary’s Meanders and believes passionately in providing an experience and service you will never forget.
A Dublin lass, born and bred, she came to Scotland via San Francisco, having married a Scotsman. Now resident, with her family, in the Linlithgow area for 12 yrs, she brings a warm Irish hospitality to everyone she meets.
With a background in running service companies, including children’s parties and a concierge business, Emma appreciates good organisation. Having lived in the USA for 6 yrs, she is also very tuned in to the expectations of our American guests.
Emma will generally be your first point of contact and will be “pulling out all the stops” to provide your dream vacation. So, don’t hesitate to ask for something you don’t see on the website or anything a little bit quirky – that perhaps you have always wanted to do, but can’t find in a standard tour. We will do everything to accommodate all requests, where we can. Unfortunately, we have no direct line to any of the Outlander cast, so that’s one request we cannot fulfil. Sorry.
“I want all our guests to enjoy good “craic” on their visit and depart as good friends.”
Anne, Tour Guide
Anne hails originally from Glasgow, but also boasts a proud Gaelic heritage, with her Mum, one of the dwindling band of native Gaelic
speakers, and her MacLeod ancestors, coming from the Isle of Harris, where she spent her childhood summers on a traditional croft. And, yes they did spin wool on an old fashioned spinning wheel, and made Harris Tweed on a traditional loom, though thankfully, the tradition of waulking the cloth using fresh urine had long died out.
She is passionate about History, particularly the Stuarts and Mary Queen of Scots and loves historical novels – as a great introduction to many events and characters in history. Outlander is a perfect example of this, opening the eyes of the reader to the events and lifestyle of the 18th century.
“Having lived in Linlithgow for 20yrs and playing an active part in various community organisations and events, it is a great pleasure to share the sites, history, characters and stories of the town, both with locals and visitors from further afield.”
Anne is also an enthusiastic amateur genealogist and loves nothing better than getting immersed in the family trees of our ancestry visitors – and unearthing new information or special places to visit.
(As many of our guests have already carried out extensive ancestry research, we do use the services of local professional genealogists for those extra tricky queries)
“The best thing about working with Mary’s Meanders is meeting lots of lovely people from all over the World with a shared passion and love of our beautiful country.”
After watching the final episode of Outlander, series 1, I felt bereft. “What now?” I was compelled to read the Outlander books – all of them! I am completely hooked and am truly passionate about all things Outlander.
I have spent a lot of time in Texas, where my parents and two of my siblings both live.
I have also spent several years in Toronto and Virginia, where we lived before we returned to Scotland. I currently reside in Edinburgh with my husband and two daughters. I am very excited about my new administrative role with Mary’s Meanders. I hope that we will meet along our mutual Outlander journey/adventure.
After working in higher education and helping students and scholars to go abroad for 10 years, Séverine decided to do the same and moved from Paris to Scotland! She is finishing a MSc in heritage studies and is very lucky to spend her days in one of the outlander locations. She is also a keen hillwalker.
Renate is from Germany, and first came to Scotland 30 years ago when her school was linked with Larbert High in Stirlingshire. Since then, she’s spent nearly every holiday in Scotland and has got to know a lot more about the country and its history.
Diane Gabaldon’s Outlander series enabled her to combine her love of reading with her passion for Scotland and she has been guiding people around the Land of Outlander even before the TV series was filmed.
Renate looks forward to sharing her love and passion for Scotland with you.
