Inside a Traditional Kilt Workshop
Discover how a traditional Scottish kilt is made in this fascinating workshop experience in Scotland.
One of the standout features of the Outlander television series has been the beautiful costumes, including the iconic Scottish kilt. This has sparked a fascination with tartan, clans and the tradition of Highland dress.
While there are many kilt shops and makers across Scotland, it’s rare to step inside a setting where you can truly discover how a Scottish kilt is made and learn about the craftsmanship behind this iconic garment.
This special workshop gives you the chance to go behind the scenes of traditional kilt making. Led by Heather, who is experienced in the craft of traditional kilt making, you’ll discover the history, fabrics and techniques that bring a kilt to life. Guests will see how tartan cloth is carefully measured, folded and pleated to create Scotland’s most recognisable national dress.
The workshop can be tailored for small family or friend groups, as well as larger tour groups.
During the workshop you will experience:
- A brief history of tartan and Highland dress
- A demonstration of kilt and tweed fabrics, including designs, pleating and traditional techniques
- Insights into the craftsmanship involved in creating a traditional Scottish kilt
- The opportunity to make a tartan brooch or pin to take home as a souvenir
All materials are provided and guests will leave with their own handmade tartan keepsake.
Delivered by: Heather Borthwick
Duration: 1 1/2 – 2 hours
Experience Kilt Craftsmanship at Outlander’s Lallybroch
This workshop can also be experienced in the unique setting of Midhope Castle, known to Outlander fans as Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s family home in the series. You can enjoy a guided visit to Midhope Castle followed by the kilt workshop, making it a truly special experience for fans of Outlander and anyone interested in Scotland’s heritage and traditions.
This is a demonstration and storytelling experience where you’ll see how a traditional kilt is crafted — guests do not make a kilt themselves.
